Designing a Bathroom That Your Child Will Love

by William Scott

If you need to decorate your kid’s bathroom, you have some unique challenges ahead of you. Young children use the bathroom in general much more often than older kids do, and are often accompanied by a parent. That makes a kid’s bathroom much more used in general than those mostly used by an adult. However, most parents don’t know how to decorate their kid’s bathroom so that it’s whimsical and “fun.” Children can be very verbal about what they don’t like, so if you’re the parent of a young child, you might find that your kid disagrees with your design choices. We’ll offer some tips and tricks so that you can decorate your kid’s bathroom in a way that you’ll both like.

Knowing The Gender Behind The Decorations

A boy’s bathroom can be decorated to appeal to his interest in specific passions such as cars, cowboys, bugs, etc. A bathroom used by a young girl can be decorated to appeal to other passions that a boy may not be interested in such as dolls or princesses. Decorating a bathroom begins with the gender of the child (or children) who will use the bathroom. If both a girl and a boy are going to use the same bathroom, it’s important to keep a neutral theme in the bathroom while catering to their interests simultaneously. For every need or theme, there are plenty of accessories that you can use.

Accessories and Decorations to Use

There are dozens of accessories that you can use to decorate a kid’s bathroom. For example, if your child enjoys cars, you can buy a bathmat and curtain set that have cars on them. Similarly, if your child likes Disney cartoons, you can use a bathroom rug that has pictures of their favorite cartoon characters.

Toothbrush tumblers are another consideration, and come in literally hundreds of styles. For example, you could buy a dinosaur-shaped tumbler, or one of Cinderella. Lotion pumps or hand soap can be bought to fit within your chosen theme, too.

Doorknobs, wastebaskets, soap dishes and tissue dispensers can be found which will cater to the interests of any child. For instance, you can replace the knobs on any cabinets or drawers in your child’s bathroom to ones which will appeal to them. Clowns, animals, cars - really anything which interests your child can be readily adopted as a bathroom dcor.

A Bathroom That Grows With Your Child

As your children get older, the things that inspire or entertain them changes. Accessories and decorations can be easily replaced as your child’s passions change. Bathmats, shower curtains, tumblers, soap dispensers and knobs can be changed to reflect a child’s new interests.

You should avoid the use of decorations which will be hard to switch out as your child ages. A wallpaper pattern of giraffes may be very appealing to a four year old - but less so when they are twelve. This will leave you with wallpaper you’ll have to replace when your child outgrows their obsession with giraffes.

Decorating a bathroom for your child is limited only by your own imagination - there are so many options open to you that the hardest part will be choosing which to go with. The way to put together a bathroom your child will love is to know what they are interested in and buy decorations and accessories which meet those interests. Just make sure that they are decorations which will be easy to replace as your child outgrows their interests. A little planning will long way towards designing a bathroom perfect for your child, no matter what they are into this year.
